In a groundbreaking fusion of two iconic franchises, Magic: The Gathering (MTG) and Final Fantasy are set to release a collaborative card set on June 13, 2025. This partnership, announced by Wizards of the Coast and Square Enix, aims to blend MTG’s strategic gameplay with the rich narratives and characters of the Final Fantasy series, offering an unparalleled experience for fans of both universes.

The upcoming set will encompass all sixteen mainline Final Fantasy titles, from the original 1987 release to the latest installment, Final Fantasy XVI. Players can anticipate encountering legendary heroes such as Cloud Strife, Terra Branford, Lightning, and Noctis Lucis Caelum, as well as formidable antagonists like Sephiroth and Kefka Palazzo. Iconic creatures and summons, including Chocobos, Moogles, Ifrit, and Bahamut, will also make their debut in the MTG universe.

This collaboration is part of MTG’s Universes Beyond initiative, which integrates external intellectual properties into the MTG framework. Notably, the Final Fantasy set will be the first Universes Beyond release to be legal across all MTG formats, including Standard, Pioneer, and Modern. This marks a significant shift in MTG’s approach, aiming to seamlessly incorporate beloved franchises into its core gameplay.
The set promises an extensive collection of Final Fantasy artwork, featuring contributions from both MTG artists and renowned Final Fantasy illustrators. Early previews have showcased stunning renditions of characters and scenes, such as Kefka Palazzo from Final Fantasy VI, Emet-Selch from Final Fantasy XIV, and the iconic moment between Yuna and Tidus from Final Fantasy X. This artistic endeavor aims to capture the essence of Final Fantasy’s storytelling within the MTG card format.

Shoichi Ichikawa, Producer of the Final Fantasy series at Square Enix, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “This collaboration allows us to merge the immersive storytelling of Final Fantasy with the strategic depth of Magic: The Gathering, creating a unique experience that fans of both franchises will appreciate.” Zakeel Gordon, Product Architect at Wizards of the Coast, added, “It’s about celebrating decades of iconic characters, legendary stories, and unforgettable moments from one of the most beloved franchises in gaming history.”
In preparation for the release, Wizards of the Coast has outlined a schedule leading up to the launch. Prerelease events are planned for June 6, 2025, offering players an early opportunity to experience the new cards. The official spoiler season is set to begin in late May, with daily card reveals building anticipation within the community. The set will be available in both physical form and digitally on Magic: The Gathering Arena, ensuring accessibility for a wide range of players.

This collaboration signifies a notable evolution in MTG’s Universes Beyond series, reflecting a strategic shift to integrate external properties more cohesively into the game’s ecosystem. By making the Final Fantasy set legal in all constructed formats, Wizards of the Coast aims to enrich the MTG experience while honoring the legacy of Final Fantasy. As the release date approaches, fans can look forward to more detailed previews and announcements, heralding a new chapter in the fusion of these two legendary franchises.
